Auto tip of the day: Toyota Chassis codes

simple stuff really

Toyota uses a simple system that can be broken down in 4 parts

1) First set of letter[s] = Engine family : this code symbolizes the engine family used in the car. e.g. AE86 and AW10 both use engines from the A family. ZZT231 uses an engine from the ZZ family, JZA80 uses a JZ engine etc.

2) Second letter = Chassis family : this symbolizes the chassis on which the car is based. e.g. AE111 and ZZE120 both use the E chassis [aka the corolla chassis] SW20 and ZZW30 both use the W chassis [aka the MR2 chassis]

3) First set of Numbers = Generation : this number represents the nth generation of the chassis e.g. AE86 is the 8th generation of the E chassis while AE92 is the 9th generation etc

4) Second number = Chassis variation : this number denotes a difference in the chassis e.g. the AE85 has a lower spec engine, lower spec transmission and lower spec suspension than the AE86. Same for the ZZT230 and ZZT231
